The Red Sox unique broadcasting situation is going to continue for the rest of the season.
Jerry Remy released a statement saying that he was undergoing chemotherapy treatment starting on August 22, according to WBZ’s Dan Roche, who also calls the Patriots preseason games. Now, remembering the timeline on John Farrell’s cancer treatment timeline in 2015, that means Remy will not be back in the booth this season.
It’s definitely unfortunate to hear this. Remy is very popular as a Red Sox broadcaster and he has battled cancer for quite some time now. He’s also been the Red Sox color man for over three decades, so he is the voice most fans are used to hearing and quite frankly love hearing at this point. In that same timespan, there’s been a ton of sideline reporters to come and go and several play-by-play men, so Remy is doing something right.
In the meantime, the Red Sox will continue going with Dennis Eckersley at home and guest broadcasters elsewhere. Realistically though, I don’t see any reason why Eck can’t make the trip down to NYC, so it will be interesting to see if that happens.
This marks the fifth time that Remy has battled lung cancer which is very sad to see, but the positive side is he has beat it every single time, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing him back in the booth in 2018. Dave O’Brien definitely will be as well.

Even so, he’s still in the Dontourage, so that’s good. I don’t think Don could blame him either. Together, those guys put out some absolute gold content.
Hopefully, Remy is doing well and is able to keep up with the Red Sox. He definitely would’ve loved to have been calling the games on this current win streak.
