5 Outdoor Skating Rinks To Enjoy In Boston & Beyond

2019 is off to a chilly start. Although the cold weather can be depressing, there is one thing it's perfect for - ice skating!

Bundle up in plenty of layers and head to one of these fabulous outdoor rinks in and around Boston for a day of fun, vigorous exercise! These spots have something for every skater, whether you prefer figure skating, speed skating, or games of pick-up hockey.

1. Community Ice Skating at Kendall Square 

From mid-December to mid-March, the rink at Kendall Square offers skate rentals, lessons, and private rink rentals for parties or hockey leagues. The facility is refrigerated, zamboni-maintained and located in a beautiful landscaped courtyard.

2. Jack Kirrane Ice Skating Rink 

The Jack Kirrane Ice Skating Rink is open to the public from December 1 through March 3. They offer skating lessons, adult and kids hockey leagues, as well as private rentals. The rink rents figure skates and hockey skates for those who do not have their own, and offers skate sharpening for those who do. There is also a food concession stand during public skate hours with hot beverages and small snacks.

3) Kelly Outdoor Rink 

 Located right in the center of Jamaica Plain, The Peter J. Kelly Skating Rink plays Motown and soul music for a fun, casual skating experience. Open to the public with free skating from mid-December through late February. The Kelly Rink does not have a concessions stand, so BYO hot chocolate or coffee!

4) Frog Pond Skating Rink 

The Boston Common Frog Pond is probably the best known outdoor rink in the area. It was even voted the #1 outdoor rink in the US by USA Today! They rent adult and child size figure and hockey skates as well as "Bobby the Skating Seal" skate aids for beginners. Folks under 58 inches tall always skate for free!

5. Winter Skate at Patriot Place 

Foxborough is a bit of a hike from Boston, but every New Englander should experience an outdoor skate at Patriot Place at least once! Their Winter Skate offers a 60-by-140-foot, zamboni-maintained recreational skate surface with day and evening public skating. 

The rink features an observation deck for non-skaters, on-site skate rentals, concessions, and free parking. Patriot Place also features tons of shopping, dining and entertainment options perfect for brightening up a chilly winter day!
