Boston's "Urban Nutcracker" Is A Diverse Remix Of The 19th Century Classic

For many families, a live performance of Tchaikovsky’s 19th Century fairy tale, The Nutcracker, is an annual holiday tradition.

This year, try something a bit more funky and upbeat with Anthony Williams’ Urban Nutcracker!

Not only is it set right here in Boston, it fuses the original music and ballet with jazzy tunes from the likes of Duke Ellington as well as an array of dance styles including urban tap, hip hop, swing, flamenco, step, and of course, ballet.

According to the Urban Nutcracker Facebook page:

"The diversity Urban Nutcracker delivers in dance and music is matched by the diversity of performers you will see on the stage. Urban Nutcracker is a reflection and celebration of our multi-cultural communities brought to life by passionate and talented dancers and performers of all colors, creeds, sexual orientations and experiences."

This season marks 19 years for the innovative, ever-evolving show. Despite the modern flare, fans of The Nutcracker will find that the themes and over-all feel remain the same.

The show is constantly innovating to bring you the latest in dance and music while staying true to the spirit of the Nutcracker.

This year promises to add spectacular new dimensions including updated choreography, costumes and surprise guest walk-on roles!

Diverse, multi-cultural performers will "illuminate your imagination with the hope of a more inclusive world" where "all we share outshines our few differences."

The remaining 2019 performances of The Urban Nutcracker will take place through December 28 at the Boch Center Schubert Theater.
