Shawn Thornton gets a front office job in hockey

Shawn Thornton no longer needs to get his head bashed in to be involved with the NHL.

The former Bruins enforcer and fourth line winger was recently named the Florida Panthers VP of Business Operations. No, that’s not Cam Neely’s job. Neely is the President of the Bruins. Seriously though, that’s not a bad start for Thornton.

Thornton also has some TV experience, but in his NHL playing. career he put up 109 points (43 goals, 66 assists) in 810 games. From a scoring standpoint, 2010-2011 was peak Thornton; he had 20 points on the year (10 goals, 10 assists).

Everyone will probably remember Thornton the same way as a player. So with that in mind, here’s a video of him beating up your favorite Bruins player.

CBS Boston suggested that some people thought eventually he would end up on radio (in fact it was in their lede) in Boston and since they own 98.5 The Sports Hub, you have to think they had the resources to make such a move happen–whether or not it is something Thornton wanted to pursue. Heck, they even go as far as to say, he’s doing this front office job “for now”. Yes, we are going to nitpick wording because it can give a lot away.

But man, what a reunion that would be. Certainly would be a power move in the Boston Market (not the chicken place) to add a knowledgeable hockey guy to a radio show. Former Red Sox infielder Lou Merloni, former Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak and former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria all work for WEEI, and part of the Sports Hub’s initial promise to compete against WEEI when they opened up seemed to be hockey talk. So who knows? Maybe one day…

And, of course, the second half of this is pure speculation. You’ve got to wonder about it though…
