Boston Pops Announces An All-Female Lineup For July 4th Celebration

The Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra is preparing to host their 89th Fourth of July Celebration, and 2018 is shaping up to be a great year for the ladies!

The group announced today that pop star and Newton native, Rachel Platten will headline the annual Fireworks Spectacular. She is best known for her 2015 chart-topping hit, "Fight Song."

Additional appearances will include the Indigo Girls, Grammy Award-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and the ever-fabulous Rita Moreno of West Side Story fame.

“I really think sometimes it comes out just like you want it to come out, and I think this is one of the cases,” Keith Lockhart, director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, said in an interview. “We’re very proud that it’s, for one thing, an all-female lineup of performers, which is not accidental given the world over the last few months.”

In addition to the all-girl performances, this year's concert will also pay tribute to legendary composer, Leonard Bernstein. Bernstein was a native of Lawrence, Massachusetts and a Harvard alumnus who made his professional conducting debut with the Boston Pops in 1941 before going on to become the music director of the New York Philharmonic.

After the incredible lineup of live musical performances, the world famous annual fireworks show will top off the evening. Set to the sounds of the Boston Pops, the display will light up the city skyline for a full 20 minutes!

The free, public event begins at 8 p.m. July 4th on the Esplanade. If you are unable to attend, be sure to catch a live broadcast or stream on Bloomberg TV, Boston.com and BostonGlobe.com.
