Theis pitching in for the Celtics this season

It’s not every day that your favorite NBA team has a 25-year-old rookie. That’s something that happens in baseball, not hockey. There’s NBA superstars who would be considered seasoned veterans that are 25 years old. That didn’t stop Daniel Theis from becoming a solid piece of the Celtics this season, however.

The Germany native spent time on the Washington Wizards summer league team in the past but was never an NBA player per se, he played pro basketball in Europe and was a member of the German national basketball team In 2017, he earned the German League Best Defender award.

The Celtics then signed him in July to add depth to their squad and he ended up cracking the team’s roster. Since then, he has done his job and done it well.

Theis has played in 36 games for the Celtics to date, averaging 13.3 minutes per contest. That has increased as of late, however with him playing 19.2 minutes per game in the last five games.

Twice in that span, he had double-digit point totals. He even had a double-double against the Chicago Bulls on the 23rd where he sank eight free throws, grabbed 15 boards and dropped 10 points on the day. Not bad. The next game, he scored 12 points in 18 minutes against the Washington Wizards.

If the uptick in playing time and strong performances the Celtics have received from him are any indication, Theis is bound to enjoy a little more playing time than he was at the beginning of the season.

Since the Celtics have dropped three of their last five games, they need to figure something out to get things going. Maybe Theis is a part of it. He must be doing something right offensively as of late and of course, the C’s signed him for his defensive ability. Not bad.
