Bryce Brentz should help the Red Sox power department

If you want to see some home runs, then you will be happy to see who the Red Sox fourth outfielder will likely be next season.

That’s because Bryce Brentz was added to the team’s 40-man roster after this past season because he finally stayed healthy and proved what he could do in a full season at the Triple-A level.

A lot of people seemed ticked off that the 28-year-old was not a September call-up for the Red Sox this past season after belting 31 home runs in 120 games for the Pawtucket Red Sox. It was the first time he played in over 100 games in a season since 2012. It may also be worth noting he has a .380 on-base percentage and .957 OPS against lefties in 2017.

Had the Red Sox not added Brentz to their 40-man roster, he would have been scooped up as a Minor League free agent. That’s not what the Red Sox wanted to see considering they used a first round supplemental pick on Brentz in 2010 and their other two picks that year (Anthony Ranaudo, Kolbrin Vitek) were both flops.

It’s unclear how much Brentz’ power will translate over to the big league level. While he is a .287 hitter in 34 big league games (2014 and 2016), he only has one home run in that span. Regardless, the Red Sox will likely add a big time bat to the mix–who will probably DH quite a bit–so they wouldn’t be relying on Brentz heavily.

Even so, the Red Sox really could use as much help as they could in the power department. As a righty, Brentz seems like the kind of guy who could probably use the monster to his advantage. That’s always a good thing, right?

So yeah, you still probably won’t see Rusney Castillo in the bigs next year either.
